Always clear the grate and ashpan before lighting smokeless coal As coal is a mineral fuel, it requires air from below in order to combust. Ensuring there is good air flow around your coal will enable the coal to burn more effectively and at a higher temperature than if air is restricted. Never burn wet or damp smokeless coal There are numerous reasons why you should never burn smokeless coal that is wet/damp: 1) The coal will burn at a much lower rate, meaning you won’t benefit from the full heat potential. 2) The moisture from coal will rise up into the flue and potentially cause damage, especially to stainless steel liners. 3) Residue often builds up on your stove, creating an unsightly appearance that’s difficult to clean. We recommend tipping your smokeless coal into a coal bunker or indoor bucket, dependant on the amount you have. This allows the coal to air and dry out in case it has absorbed any moisture. Don’t be tempted to mix brazier smokeless coal with logs Although this seems to be a common practice, it’s not something we would recommend.  As mentioned earlier, coal needs air from below to combust, whereas wood needs air from above. Burning the fuels simultaneously is ineffective and ultimately a waste of money as neither will be able to burn to its full potential.  Moisture from burning wood and sulphur from smokeless coal can combine, forming an acid that corrodes flues. Again, this is especially true for stainless steel liners. Even kiln-dried logs contain some moisture, so it is best to avoid this altogether. It is worth mentioning that you can use wood kindling to help start your fire, however, you should always stick to one type of fuel as your main energy source.
